When you first start homeschooling, you have that shaking-in-your-boots kind of feeling. You’re overwhelmed and don’t really know where to start. For those of you who are starting this homeschooling journey—here’s a few things you need to get started homeschooling.
Things You Need to Start Homeschooling
#1. Confidence- Believe it or not, but you probably have a lot of self-doubt in your mind. You might think that you can’t do this, but in reality, YOU CAN do this. One thing you’ll need when you start homeschooling is confidence.
#2. The Internet- It’s possible to homeschool without the Internet (millions of people have done it). However, the Internet is a great tool for the homeschooling world! You have endless resources at your fingertips because of the help of the Internet.
#3. The laws of your homeschooling state- Although homeschooling is very legal, you do need to know the laws of homeschooling in your state. Don’t fret, though, most homeschool laws are fairly simple, but it is good to be informed of what you’re getting into.
#4. Support group- When I first started homeschooling, I realized it was super important to have a support group. Getting involved with other homeschooling families was a smart move on my part. I love the support of other homeschooling families.
#5. A curriculum of some sort- While you don’t need to buy a curriculum, it’s wise to have some basis of your child’s education. You may consider creating your own curriculum, using a free curriculum, or mix-matching the different curriculums available online.
#6. Perseverance (and lots of it)- I think a lot of people are afraid to homeschool because it’s such a big responsibility. One of the best things about homeschooling is that it teaches children so much about not giving up! Parents can learn a lot in the field of perseverance as well when it comes to homeschooling their children.
#7. A few school supplies- Some people could homeschool with the shirt off their back. Keep in mind that you don’t need a lot to homeschool, but a few supplies are helpful. The supplies I mention are basics like a pencil and some paper.
#8. Manipulatives for learning- Some basics you might need when you’re homeschooling little ones are blocks, shapes, and any other small learning tools you can get your hands on. Things like dice, play money, and even dot markers are a good start.
#9. Space in your home- Again, you don’t need a fancy space to start homeschooling. There have been many days we just used the kitchen table. However, some families prefer to have a set place in the home to do their homeschooling.
#10. A little sanity- Homeschooling may confuse you and drive you up a wall some days, but it’s totally worth it at the end of the day. While some days you may feel like you’re losing your sanity, a little sanity does help to make the homeschooling day go a little smoother.
