When it comes to learning, parents will do almost anything to make sure their child understands a learning concept. Over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that parents can teach their children a variety of concepts with just a basic manipulative known as blocks. Blocks are fairly inexpensive and a great tool to have in your home!
Check out these 10 ways parents can use blocks to help their child learn.
#1. Counting- You probably guessed that you could use blocks to help your child learn how to count. They key behind the success of learning to count with blocks is to be consistent. You can also go as far as learning addition and subtraction with something as simple as blocks.
#2. Colors- Since blocks are multiple colors, they make the perfect tool for teaching your child to know about their colors. I’ve also used blocks to teach about primary colors and what happens when you mix various colors together.
#3. Building- The main purpose of blocks is for building, as you can see. Learning how to strategize with blocks is a great learning concept and blocks are the perfect tool for this!
#4. Social skills- Nothing can help your child make friends better than teaching them how to share blocks. When children play with blocks together they are working on their social skills.
#5. Language- Language is a huge part of learning and you can talk a lot with your child as you’re playing blocks. Talk to your child about what they are learning, seeing, hearing, and feeling!
#6. Problem solving- Things can go awry really quickly when it comes to block building. Your child will learn how to solve problems when their blocks fall down. The solution would be to start building the blocks again, which also teaches perseverance.
#7. Spatial skills– Blocks can do more than keep your child occupied. Spatial skills are developed as your child learns where to place blocks and how to place them. Spatial skills are important in elementary school, but also as a child reaches adulthood and goes into a profession such as engineering or science.
#8. Science- Parents can use blocks to help their child learn about science. Teach them why blocks fall down when they get to high. Or why it’s important to build a proper foundation for a block “house” to stay put.
#9. Hands on learning- There’s no doubt that some children just learn better when they do hands on activities. Blocks can be an aid in helping their hands-on-child learn new concepts each and every day!
#10. Shapes– Last but not least, blocks can be a great tool for a parent to help teach their child about shapes!
There are so many funs ways in which you can teach your child through the use of blocks. I hope these ten tips give you and your child a true advantage when it comes to learning.
