My family has grown rapidly over the past five years. We now have four children and our oldest will be seven in a few short months. Now is the time to start focusing on those family traditions that they will carry into their family. I wanted to share some tips for enjoying something like Advent as a family. Advent is a countdown to Christmas, a period of waiting and studying and an eventual celebration of Jesus’ birth. There are several ways to enjoy advent, it all comes down to a personal choice really.
Make Time for It
In the season of business like the holidays, it’s so easy to forget about the most important thing. If it were not for the birth of Jesus, we wouldn’t even be enjoying this beautiful season. I think it’s so important to make time for Advent. To sit down and take the time to reflect on Jesus’ birth.
Make It Exciting
I get that sometimes things cannot be made exciting, however, with something like advent you surely don’t want to make it boring. Get excited about sharing Jesus with your kids. Don’t read in a monotone voice, use voice inflictions. Pique the curiosity of your kids by making the readings exciting!
Share Your Heart
Kids don’t want to hear a fake version of your feelings. They want to know why you feel the way you do and why. If you’re passionate about a certain scripture, share your heart on it and let your kids know why you’re excited about it. The same goes for your kids. If they are excited about something from the Bible, let them talk and get their feelings across.
Go On an Advent Journey
This year my family is doing Advent through a great book called Waiting Here for You “An Advent Journey of Hope” by Louie Giglio. We chose to do this book as a family because each reading focuses on prepping our hearts for Christmas. Advent is the perfect season to prepare your heart and soul for Christmas.
The focus of Waiting Here for You is that waiting on the Lord is not wasteful. Everyone should get excited for the Christmas season, because it represents something greater than ourselves. Instead of wasting this period of waiting, my family will enjoy great scriptures, prayer, and readings from this awesome book, authored by Louie Giglio.
I encourage you to grab Waiting Here for You “An Advent Journey of Hope” by Louie Giglio and to enjoy this Advent season with your family, big or small. This book can be found on Family Christian’s website.
