Winter months can be long and if your kids are shut in because of snow or any other severe weather everyone can start to go stir crazy. One of my favorite ways to break up the boredom and keep my Mini (and myself) entertained is to make pull up a homemade play dough recipe. While in the grips of winter Hot Cocoa Homemade Play dough just seems like the way to go to make dreary days a little more fun. This recipe is pretty easy and you can have a large batch whipped up in about 10 minutes.
Hot Cocoa Play Dough Recipe
You will Need:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
1/4 cup baking cocoa
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 T. coconut oil
1 T. cream of Tartar
In a large pot over medium-high heat combine flour, water, salt, baking soda, coconut oil, and cream of tartar.
Stir mixture frequently until it begins to pull away from the sides of the pan and clump together, quickly mix in vanilla extract.
Remove from heat and allow it to cool until it is comfortable to the touch, knead for 1-2 minutes until cool and the mixture is smooth and well mixed.
If your play dough is a bit dry you can work in a little more coconut oil until desired texture is reached, or if it is too wet simply knead a tiny bit of flour in at a time until it feels good.
Store your play dough in a container with a tight fitting lid, to gift it you can place it in a large mason jar and add a pretty handmade tag.
Besides just being fun to knead and shape you can use your play dough too
- Stamp sight or spelling words into.
- Shape the dough into your practice words.

- Create a dramatic play center
- Build fine motor skills
